Il Gardellino was founded in 1988, stimulated by oboist Marcel Ponseele and flautist Jan De Winne. The ensemble borrows its name from the concerto 'del Gardellino', meaning 'goldfinch', by Antonio Vivaldi. Over the last few years, the ensemble's original strength has been expanded in order to be able to play more extensive works. Il Gardellino often also joins forces with other ensembles, such as Cappella Amsterdam (NL) and the Gesualdo Consort (GB).
All Gardellino members are historically informed performance practice specialists. The ensemble has an extensive discography and performs at festivals in Europe and beyond. Johann Sebastian Bach's oeuvre remains at the centre stage of the repertoire, although it is regularly put into a broader perspective.
