Piet Van Bockstal (°1963) studied at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels with Paul Dombrecht and took private courses with Hansjörg Schellenberger and John Anderson. Since 1985, he is first oboe solo with the Royal Flemish Philharmonic.
Van Bockstal performed almost the complete repertoire for oboe as a soloist – more than 70 concerti for oboe and orchestra to date – as well as in chamber music settings with the Oxalys ensemble, pianist Yutaka Oya, the Lindsay String Quartet and the Arditti Quartet, to name a few. He made some 40 CD recordings, including an anthology of Belgian music for oboe and music chamber orchestra. He has also built a strong reputation as a performer of contemporary music, especially of the compositions of Kalevi Aho, whose complete works for oboe and orchestra were released in 2012, together with Yutaka Oya and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra conducted by Martyn Brabbins.
Van Bockstal co-founded Ictus. He regularly works with the foreign ensembles Musikfabrik and Remix.
