Brussels-based contemporary music ensemble Ictus has since its inception in 1994 been working as a mixed 'electric orchestra' with a conductor and a sound engineer in their midst. It is housed on the premises of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker's dance company Rosas, with which it has collaborated on fourteen productions. Ictus has also collaborated with choreographers such as Wim Vandekeybus, Maud Le Pladec, Eleanor Bauer and Fumiyo Ikeda. Since 2004, Ictus is ensemble-in-residence at the Lille Opera.
The issue of formats and listening systems is a central concern: mini or maxi concerts, mystery programmes, concerts with comments, concerts-cum-festivals where the audience is at liberty to roam around the stages. Amongst the twenty or so CDs released by Ictus, the two albums devoted to Fausto Romitelli have been particularly influential due to the audacity of their mixes. In the same spirit, Ictus is launching a new collection under the label Sub Rosa, Contra Naturam. Ictus is running an Advanced Master on Contemporary Music in collaboration with the Ghent School of Arts.
