Stefan Van Eycken (°1975) studied musicology at the University of Leuven. He also took summer courses in English literature in Edinburgh, and composition in Avignon with Marco Stroppa. At the end of the 1990s he wrote a doctoral thesis on the work of Brian Ferneyhough in Edinburgh, where he also lectured in music analysis and aesthetics. As from October 2000, Van Eycken has been living in Tokyo, where he initially wrote a book on the music of Yuji Takahashi, with the support of a year-long Japan Foundation Fellowship. He closely collaborates with ChampdAction.

Van Eycken's point of departure is sound, and what this sound induces: movement. In his work, instruments can no longer be automatically associated with their customary sound. The instruments' limits are explored. Central in Van Eycken's work are the relationship between sound and technique, his search for ways of developing his own approach to electronics and technique, and his interest in improvisation.
